The original outing for Kim Newman s vampire heroine and still the best Warhammer fantasy novel.

A weird back to front story A bit vampire horror would have improved it, but overall good fun.

An excellent read and one of the very best warhammer titles I ve read The characters are engaging and the plot is witty, mysterious and dark The cynical reader could see how the storyline was going to pan out at a very early stage but it was a fun read watching it transpire.

Long saddled with a reputation as penny dreadfuls, Games Workshop s fiction range has been much maligned over the years, and has struggled to break away from its fan fiction bonds.Luckily, Drachenfels proves, that in the hands of a gifted author, even the most unoriginal setting can rise above the staleness of mediocrity.Packed with wit, action, and a little romance, Drachenfels is the stand out book amongst Games Workshop s cannon of works It s the one book in my collection I return to year after year, and speaks highly of the skill of Jack Yeovil, aka Kim Newman, he of Anno Dracula fame, and well known film critic Superb stuff.

THE STORY A brash young Imperial noble, a vampire girl and a fellowship of rogues and heroes undertake a quest to destroy the evil sorcerer Drachenfels Twenty five years later that noble hires the genius playwrite Detlef Sierck to write and stage a reconstruction of the adventure in Castle Drachenfels itself.WHAT S GOOD I wasn t expecting much when I started reading this book, Warhammer novels tend to be all blood and guts and little depth I was very pleasantly surprised, however, to find myself reading a novel of subtlety and humour as well as blood and guts The characters are all well realised, being perfectly believable in their vanities and fears, and the description of Drachenfels Castle was so evocative and delightfully gothic that for a moment I thought I was reading Bram Stoker s masterpiece Another excellent element to this book is that you always think you know where the story is going next, but then Yeovil twists things right back on you and takes you by surprise Finally, I d like to say that, despite my premonitions of a cheap B movie sorcerer, Drachenfels turned out to be a genuinely chilling villain of fearsome power.WHAT S BAD Nothing stands out as being particularly wrong with this book The gore and entrails is a bit overdone in places, but as I say, that s standard for a Warhammer book Also, I managed to predict the final twist about a chapter in advance see if you can too.An unmissable read for fans of Warhammer or simply lovers of gothic fantasy.

I read this as part of the bumper volume Genevieve I mistakenly purchased that book thinking it was one long novel, as I don t normally read books containing than one story However, it s just as good to know that there are several within that volume, and Drachenfels was the first.I have always wanted to get into this kind of fantasy fiction, a little put off by the category called The Black Library though but have always been deterred by the massively thick volumes they always seem to be in this particular genre, and also their notoriety for being riddled with difficult and unpronounceable names which does not help.Though I was not entirely sure what was going on in this some of the time, I have to say, that with regards to atmosphere and vivid scenes, this was a wonderful read At times, I really felt I was there within the castle, passageways and halls This was true escapism for me even if I didn t always understand it all, and so I would certainly read by this Author.

A Brilliant story really well written It keeps you guessing until the end. Many of the warhammer books are only of interest to fans of warhammer, this book, however, is brilliant and can be enjoyed by everyone.I cannot recomend it enough It is a brilliant fantasy story, but unlike many other fantasies, it only has a few hundred pages and you won t get bogged down over 600 pages and then have to buy the next 5 installments You can just pick this up, get into it straight away, enjoy it immensely, and then move onto a new book
