I found nearly every story in this book totally absorbing Jon Krakauer is a master story teller who by his own self deprecation left me enjoying both his exploits and his failings, and wanting to hear An excellent read for armchair mountaineers Well written and with great variety of content in different chapters I enjoy John Krakauer s style, having read Into thin air and would recommend this book to anybody. No one writes about mountaineering and its attendant victories and hardships brilliantly than Jon Krakauer In this collection of his finest essays and reporting, Krakauer writes of mountains from the memorable perspective of one who has himself struggled with solo madness to scale Alaska s notorious Devils Thumb In Pakistan, the fearsome K killsof the world s most experienced mountain climbers in one horrific summer In Valdez, Alaska, two men scale a frozen waterfall over afoot drop In France, a hip international crowd of rock climbers, bungee jumpers, and paragliders figure out new ways to risk their lives on the towering peaks of Mont Blanc Why do they do it How do they do it In this extraordinary book, Krakauer presents an unusual fraternity of daredevils, athletes, and misfits stretching the limits of the possible From the paranoid confines of a snowbound tent to the thunderous, suffocating terror of a whiteout on Mount McKinley, Eiger Dreams spins tales of driven lives, sudden deaths, and incredible victories This is a stirring, vivid book about one of the most compelling and dangerous of all human pursuits Dated and a bit too self indulgent Krakauer is at his best when there is some degree of separation between him and his subject Read this only after Where Men Win Glory, Under the Banner of Heaven, Into Thin Air, and Into the Wild Started reading Krakauer after watching Into The Wild and have found all his books to be a fantastic read His stories are always well written and gives you that just ten minutes feel when you know you ought to put it down and do something else. love the style of writing, a great collection of stories making this an excellent companion read I received a different edition to the one shown on the site image It wasn t important in this case but I would avoid buying from them in the future if I was looking for a particular edition. It s filled with hard hitting tales of relentless action and high octane adventure Avalanches, blizzards, snow storms, sub zero temperatures against the glorious human spirit that refuses to give up Brilliant As a climber, I found this book to be a very interesting insight into ALL aspects of the wide spectrum of climbing in its various guises.Unique book, in that way.I really enjoyed it and it featured a couple of climbs I d also done in the French Alps.Interesting to read his experiences on those routes. I am fan of Krakauer and I particularly enjoyed his Into Thin Air Although this may lack the drama and immediacy of that he still gets to visit and meet some very interesting people, doing many creative and crazy things in some of the most dangerous and isolated parts of the world Always a reliable and agreeable voice on the great outdoors.
