I knew Jeffery quite well in the Margaret Thatcher years and listened to many of his after dinner and other speeches which never failed to entertain.Although Jeffery is unaware, he is responsible for literally saving mine and a few other lives In conversation or from a speech, I regret I am too old to remember which, he mentioned that when he checked into an Hotel, he always paced out the distance from his room to the fire escape.I was awoken from sleep at the Oyster Bay Hotel in Dar es Salaam by what turned out to be the roof tiles crashing onto my bedroom ceiling Upon opening my french windows, I discovered a MAJOR fire engulfing the complex.Fortunately, there were few guests in residence at the time and they were close to my room and we evacuated as per the lesson Jeffery had taught me.I have no doubt that this fire was an Insurance Fraud Hotel owner left during the day of the night fire and it was established that the fire started in the owner s suite.First time in 4 years of intermittent but regular stays at Oyster Bay that there was no security at reception and I had to climb over reception area to obtain my room key. When I suggested ARSON to the Insurers, my previously disputed small claim for camera equipment was immediately settled Corruption Rules Jeffery tells the best stories you are ever likely to encounter I have read this book so many times, but when I saw it had been reduced for the Kindle I just had to buy it even though I have the paper copy The story of little Charlie Trumper selling from his barrow stretching from the turn of the 20th century, through the World Wars right through to when Charlie is an old man is indeed an epic tale It is a long book, at a little over 700 pages, but don t let that put you off The storytelling is captivating and as each chapter leaves you on a cliffhangar, I found it very difficult to put this book down Fantastic The complexity of the character was amazing I loved having chunks of the lives of each main character tell the story and then find another section of a different character expanded on the understanding of the other character and also the main story Jeffrey Archer is an fantastic author and deserves his now international reputation.I always look forward to a new book from him as I know it is going to be special The last night of reading I was awake until 3 o clock and after finishing I still couldn t sleep as the character, storyline and the finish was so clever He seems to build a book like a building starting with the foundations, then building the walls as characters then adding all of the refinements to make it work Do I like it absolutely YES I have read authors who have a better style, I have read authors whose command of dialogue is far better, I have read wordsmiths who are truly impressive but Mr Archer is a consummate story teller He unfolds the tale with a flair that make the reader want to continue reading last 2am this is no exception, well done. They say there s nowt as queer as folks and I suspect that in forming the characters in this book Archer has brought in the best and the worst of the folks he has come across in hi life.Do I believe a Charlie Trumper ever existed Yes,of course, but why Because most people want to reach a point in life where they have nothing to prove to anyone, but how many of us do So consider this little ryme. They say I couldn t, I say I could. They say I shouldn t, I say I should. They say.You wouldn t, I say I would.Whatever the say that fact is still. If I want to, I B.Y well will.Well done Jeffrey and Charlie. I actually bought this book in hard back for my Father as I had the Kindle version It was the first Jeffrey Archer book I read and was recommend to me in turn I couldn t put the book down If you are a Londoner, then the story is even compelling I have since moved on to the Clifton Chronicles which are proving as good, if not even better as there are books in the series for every character to be explored and followed in detail. I thoroughly enjoyed this book Being on the older end of the age spectrum there were many things I could relate to and there were times it brought me to tears Many issues were raised which occur in everyday life Relationships, moral standards and dilemmas were all raised and dealt with, not necessarily as I would have chosen, but realistically I ll definitely read it again at some point. If your dream is big enough, not even your enemies can stop you Charlie Trumper s earliest memory is of hearing his grandfather s sales patter from behind his costermonger s barrow When Grandpa Charlie dies, young Charlie wants nothing than to follow in his footsteps his burning ambition is to own a shop that will sell everything The Biggest Barrow in the World Charlie s progress from the teeming streets of Whitechapel to the elegance of Chelsea Terrace is only a few miles as the crow flies But in Jeffrey Archer s expert hands it becomes an epic journey through the triumphs and disasters of the century, as Charlie follows a thread of love, ambition, and revenge to fulfil the dream his grandfather inspired I have never before finished reading such a long novel in such a short time, which is a testimony to Archer s storytelling prowess The saga of Charlie and Becky Trumper is very entertaining, with interesting characters and a flowing narrative that, through changing perspectives, takes the reader along on a fun ride, while providing a commentary on the history of twentieth century England, and that of the world Though the characters are in black and white, without any shade of grey, and some plot turns are a bit too convenient, Archer does not let the reader dwell on these shortcomings Instead, he has concentrated on giving the reader a good time, and has succeeded fully I really enjoyed this book, the characters were very interesting and believable The story weaves in the perspectives of the main characters well, and the plot was full of intrigue and easily held my attention The finale is very exciting and rewarding If you enjoyed the Ken Follett Giants Series you ll love this.
