I darkly remember the first TV series of Poldark when I was still new to this country I have watched the early episodes again and read with pleasure the novel and its sequels The only reservation I have, is that Ross Poldark does not cover enough of the Poldark story which is continued in Demelza and Jeremy Poldark So 3 books are needed to tell the story I am still reading Jeremy Poldark and am assuming this leads to a closure of the story I enjoyed the novels and it is interesting to hear the dialect of the local Cornish. Cornwall in the s when powerful forces of revolution and reaction are at large in the world The first in the riveting Poldark series Tired from a grim war in America, Ross Poldark returns to his land and his family But the joyful homecoming he has anticipated turns sour, for his father is dead, his estate is derelict, and the girl he loves is engaged to his cousin But his sympathy for the destitute miners and farmers of the district leads him to rescue a half starved urchin girl from a fairground brawl and take her home an act which alters the whole course of his life It was interesting to read the story behind the TV adaptations of this novel Reading the thoughts of Ross and Demelza adds to one s understanding of the characters motivations I m glad I read the book but I ll read something s else before I return to tead the next one in the series TBH I preferred the trilogy written by Crosbie Garstin It s better written as evidenced by its being part of the Penzance Literary Festival and the story is fast paced and wide ranging than The Poldark series. Ross Poldark is a wonderful story, the beginning of a terrific saga of twelve great books.Once you have read the first one you want to read.A story of romance, courage, historical fact all interwoven with magical characters totally believable, nothing remotely far fetched. All the characters ,their big houses, their cottages, the mines, all aspects of living in the 18th century, the poverty and the grandeur ,even the illnesses they suffer are so brilliantly described one feels as though you are actually in the story itself. The much loved Ross and Demelza will find their place in literary history for centuries to come. I loved the new series and had never seen the original series or even heard of Winston Graham What a joy to discover that his books are even better than the television series Winston is a superb writer easy to read but has such depth of wisdom, and brings to life Cornwall in the 1700s and all the wonderful characters of his stories He is especially good at understanding the fundamental differences between male and female, injecting humour along with pathos, and bringing enlightenment even to the modern reader about how we are to relate to each other I am now collecting the entire set of books and each one is just as wonderful to read, especially if you love to escape the modern world and retreat to glorious Cornwall, as I do These publications are well produced, the print is just right not too small and lovely chunky reads.
