I ve loved this book ever since the first time I read it, when I was 11.I am now 34 and love reading it just as much now as I did then It is a fantastic, magical adventure I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys mythical or magical stories, stories about good vs evil, with a little bit of romance sprinkled in with the danger and excitement I love the writing style, the characters and the scenery in which the story takes place It is a brilliant book on its own, but also an exceptionally good introduction to the world of The Sword of Truth Chances are, if you like books like Lord of The Rings or The Wheel of Time, you will enjoy this The masterpiece that started Terry Goodkind sNew York Times bestselling epic Sword of Truth In the aftermath of the brutal murder of his father, a mysterious woman, Kahlan Amnell, appears in Richard Cypher s forest sanctuary seeking helpand His world, his very beliefs, are shattered when ancient debts come due with thundering violence In a dark age it takes courage to live, and than mere courage to challenge those who hold dominion, Richard and Kahlan must take up that challenge or become the next victims Beyond awaits a bewitching land where even the best of their hearts could betray them Yet, Richard fears nothing so much as what secrets his sword might reveal about his own soul Falling in love would destroy them for reasons Richard can t imagine and Kahlan dare not say In their darkest hour, hunted relentlessly, tormented by treachery and loss, Kahlan calls upon Richard to reach beyond his sword to invoke within himself something noble Neither knows that the rules of battle have just changedor that their time has run out Wizard s First Rule is the beginning One book One Rule Witness the birth of a legend A very imaginative, excellent fantasy but let down by a coupleof things which may well be ironed out in the later books I found the torture scenes too long even though they are necessary to the plot and I got the impression that TG actually enjoys writing these scenes But for most readers I would imagine these details are unpalatable and like myself are probably skipped over without detriment to the story line The second thing that I found difficult to accept is the baby language and the superficial character delineation of both Rachel and the Princess and this spoilt the flow of the narrative This is definitely for adults who love fairy tales and I include yours truly But overall the book is gripping, fast paced and leaves you wanting to know what next interesting development awaits the intrepid heroes The characters are all certainly well conceived and apart from my two caveats above hence the 4 stars the book is definitely recommended for hard line fantasy lovers This is Mervyn Peake, J R Tolkien, George Martin, Steven King and Tad Williams presented in a single package I m not really big on wizards etc, but this seemed like the shallow end of the fantasy genre so I gave it a go It starts off slowly but good and something like a young adult adventure By the end is firmly in the adult area as its grim, violent and set in a world of evil people who do evil things. The cast of characters are all good, even the villains, everyone gets introduced and their story told Its fun, lengthy and worth a read. Its probably at the easier going end of the fantasy genre and nothing too dare I say, nerdy Which was perfect for me I ve now bought the next 6 books in the series, its that good. The writing style is a little bit simplistic and he beats you over the head with foreshadowing sometimes you don t get to feel smug and clever for figuring things out because there s very little subtlety but the story is very engaging and hard to put down.I ended up not finishing the second book as some parts were very dark and I found them personally difficult to read comfortably, but if you don t mind that sort of thing I would definitely recommend the series as good but not great fantasy. I d glanced over TG s books in a book shop Then the tv series came out So I bought WFR Loved it, read all the books. It s such a great epic book, you actually are almost there in the story It s that good The story, characters, the world building It s superb.I m re reading the series, as I lost the books when I moved.Richard and Kahlan are great characters Memorable, loveable Not two dimensional like some books I ve read. You have Lois and Superman, R2 and 3po, and then there s Richard and Kahlan. When I started reading WFR it feels fresh again It feels new Exciting Like I ve picked it up for the first time.Love the new covers too Great book suitable for teens and older It is a serious book, but there is adventure, romance, surprises, action, suspense, etc There is some sexual content and violence that is not appropriate for children, but it would be ok for teens I was glad to add this book to my library. The book is about an old wizard, a young boy, and a girl trying to stop this evil ruler from taking over the world They each have special abilities, but the boy is the only one who can really save the world The wizard, girl, and other characters help him become who he is meant to be and find a way to defeat the evil ruler Definitely recommend Some passages in this book made me think about the philosophy this book was trying to portray This is the main thing I love about this book It makes you think about life, what it means to be good or evil, what meaning your actions and the reality behind the wizard s first rule The characters are not unique they are your stereotypical hero complete marysue , heroine and your local helpful wizard I liked the introduction but fell in and out of reading as it did become boring However, as soon as they introduce the main villain, I could not put it down Darken Rahl is also your stereotypical villain evil for the sake of being evil but his traits are what draws the reader to want to learn about him and his intentions So if you feel a bit bored reading at first, please keep at it till you get to the first scene with Darken Rahl It becomes so much thereafter. I came across this series thanks to the television show, Legend of the Seeker I must say, I loved the show and it was a travesty it ended However, the detail of this book is amazing and never dulls I understand the characters better, the setting is so detailed and I really do feel the show missed vital elements for the continuity of the story.Highly recommend to all I can t wait to start book 2
